Maybe it was Rudy and SNL that gave us permission to be funny again, but I think I’ll always credit that amazing 9/26/01 issue of the Onion as the refutation of the “irony is dead” theory. “Hijackers Surprised to Find Selves in Hell”, “Shattered Nation Longs to Care About Stupid Bullshit Again” — that was one for the history books.
